In light of the understandable concerns about travelling to the United States at this moment, we want to offer clarity and reassurance about the environment you will find in San Diego.
While no city or institution can guarantee absolute safety, it’s important to share the local context so attendees can make informed decisions with greater peace of mind.
San Diego’s leadership, values, and community practices differ from some national narrative, and the following points from Ben Moore, Chief Global Affairs Officer for the Office of Mayor Todd Gloria, outline the principles that guide the city’s approach to visitors, residents, and immigrant communities.
From Ben Moore, Chief Global Affairs Officer for the Office of Mayor Todd Gloria:
California, and San Diego in particular, offer different vision, perspective, and priorities than our national government, especially during this global moment.
This transcends government policies and is evident in the way our communities interact with one other. Here, we value diversity, multiculturalism and strive to be welcoming communities.
When it comes to immigration enforcement operations, which we are watching national actions closely, and working with community members to offer support to our immigrant communities, to the extent possible.
It is worth noting that California State Law (SB 54) prohibits local law enforcement entities from carrying out immigration enforcement operations (specifically: limits local law enforcement’s role in immigration enforcement; restricts information sharing and ICE holds; and only allows limited cooperation in serious cases).
More broadly, San Diego's Mayor, Todd Gloria, is committed to demonstrating global leadership that is pragmatic, optimistic, and partnership-oriented, which includes embracing our immigrant and refugee communities, celebrating our multicultural and binational identity, and welcoming visitors from around the world.
